Liverpool The 5th Beatle : An African-American Odyssey
Published in Paperback by Am-Oz-En Press (01 October, 2000)
Authors: P. Willis-Pitts, Cassandra Silk, Prem Willis-Pitts, and Vima Wolfman
Average review score:

COME TOGETHER
The writing is crisp, sharp and clear. The author does an excellent job of bringing the black neighborhoods of Liverpool to the world's collective attention. He also had the unique advantage of having an indirect connection with a Beatle -- his father and Ringo were coworkers!

The influence of black musicians on rock and roll has been well documented. Spirituals and the blues segued into rock and roll. In a recent interview, Paul McCartney himself said had it not been for the black musical pioneers, he and most other musicians would never have achieved the level of accomplishment they have today.

A riveting, well researched book. The Beatles and their music brought people together and were certainly a unifying force among the masses. I think this is something that will be treasured by all.

A fascinating comparison of Liverpool with Black America
P. Willis-Pitts was raised in a Liverpool black ghetto and become a rock musician at the time of the Mersey Sound phenomenon. He draws upon his own unique background (Ringo Starr worked with his father) to provide an insider's perspective on the rise of the Liverpool Mersy Sound as one who played in the same pubs, with the same bands, and hung out with the same people as did the Beatles. Liverpool, The 5th Beatle presents a fascinating comparison of Liverpool with Black America of the 1950s and 60s, providing insights into how the social and musical conditions in the African-American community found a direct reflection among the Liverpool Irish youth (including the Beatles) who were singularly responsible for the rise of the Mersey Sound and the resultant British invasion of the American music scene. Liverpool, The 5th Beatle is "must" reading for all Beatles fans and students of American popular music.

Liverpool, The Fifth Beatle
An engrossing eyewitness account of how and why the unique clash of heritages, races, and music in Liverpool spawned the Beatles. The writing is vivid and rhythmic, perceptive and humorous, robust and textured. The photographs lend a stark, unadorned realism to the words on the pages. Full of adventure, wit, and astute social commentary that recounts Liverpool's history in terms of its parallels with the underclasses of American society and its lessons for our future.

Marriage on the Rocks
Published in Hardcover by Delacorte Press (November, 1979)
Author: Janet Geringer Woititz
Average review score:

Great Introduction to the Family Dynamics
I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know how alcoholism affects a family as a whole.

Even if there are no children in your relationship, don't skip the chapter regarding what happens to the kids. Many alcoholics or those who are attracted to them come from childhoods were alcoholism played a part. You'll be surprised by who you recognize in this chapter.

The author stresses that the alcoholic does not have to be the husband. For the sake of simplicity, though, she wrote the information from that point of view. Keep an open mind if what she presents isn't exactly your situation.

And by all means, go to Al-Anon. It's free. Al-Anon is for families and friends of trying to cope with the behavior and thinking of an alcoholic. AA is for alcoholics. Let AA help the alcohlic get sober, because you as a family member or friend cannot do that. Those who live with, work with, are related to, or are otherwise impacted by an alcoholic's behavior will benefit from Al-Anon. Learn how not to inadvertently feed into the alcoholic behavior.

This book is a great place to start in that understanding. Another book that I recommend is "It Will Never Happen to Me" by Claudia Black.

Sanity in the midst of insanity
This book and author has had a profound affect on me! Reading it is like being thrown a lifeline in the midst of a raging insanity storm!

It has helped me see - I'm NOT crazy. I CAN be whole. There IS hope. I encourage anyone in relationship with an alcoholic to get this book and start back on the road to wholeness!

It is a must for anyone who loves an addict
This is the first book that really addresses the issue of the spouse or partners problems living in a relationship with an alcohlic.

Took care of all my guilt and frustration with my partner and pointed the way for me to make a decision to live with the problem without always trying to fix the problem

Martian Rock
Published in Paperback by Walker Books (05 February, 2001)
Authors: Carol Diggory Shields and Scott Nash
Average review score:

Excellent book to read aloud to kids - lots of fun!
I read lots of books to my 2 preschool girls, but Martian Rock is at the top of the charts. The playful rhymes make it fun for me to read aloud, and my kids get such a kick out of the story and the illustrations.

As a bonus, there are 2 pages at the end of the book with interesting facts about each of the planets in the solar system (lots of info that many adults might not know). This is one of the few books I would run out and buy for a gift for any preschooler, boy or girl.

Shields/Nash Socko Space Saga
Every Martian, gazing out into the measureless heavens, has pondered the question "Is there anything out there?" "Martian Rock" answers this question for all time, and you'll love it even if you are Venusian, Plutonian, or Earthling. Four Martian astronauts take off in their shiny-red spacecar in search of intelligent life. It's a long and frustrating odyssey, as they flit from one visually-stunning but unpopulated planet to another. Exhausted and cranky and depleted of clean underwear, our heroes are ready to throw in the interstellar towel and head home, but they decide to make one last stop, and suddenly encounter life---maybe not spectacularly intelligent life, but indisputably genial. Carol Diggory Shields's clever story and charming rhyming text could captivate even the most cosmos-indifferent child, but it's Scott Nash's dazzlingly colorful and funny illustrations that would make "Martian Rock" a heavy-rotation item on any child's book-at-bedtime reading program. Parents will love it, too; it has the same transgenerational crossover appeal of "Toy Story".

I love it
I love all her books. Maybe that's just because she's my aunt. But no, they are entertaining. The kids I babysit for have them all. And the illustrations are good. Buy the books.

Meaty, Beaty, Big & Bouncy: The Who (The Companion Series)
Published in Paperback by Schirmer Books (December, 1900)
Author: John Perry
Average review score:

Good stuff- by an author who's been there.
Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy

This is the real Who; the Rock'n Roll years when they wrote disposable hits that lasted all the way to the next one, a few weeks later. They just happened to be some of the greatest tunes ever written and MBBB is the account of how they came to be.

Author John Perry was one of the most elegant Rock'n Roll guitarists, and it shows. He knows his stuff; how the group set about producing its sounds, the history of the Who's management (surely one of the more colourful in the business) and he has viewed unique early material in the BBC's archives.

This is a great story, a cracking read and you earn a lot on the way.

Most comical Who book I've ever read. Excellent book.
Excellent book, and very funny. Most Who books are so serious. Not a all like The Who I know. The chapter on 'I'm a Boy', and the stuff about Zeppelin, I couldn't stop laughing.

Dave Marsh's 'Before I Get Old' is very thorough, but it's a bit dry. You can tell Meaty, Beaty, Big & Bouncy is written by a musician by the way the author conveys the feel of the music.

Tells you more about Townshend's best song than any other book I've come across.

Great pictures too.

Classic Who Bio
A thoroughly well researched, entertaining and witty look into the madcap world of the Who and their rather fine music...buy this book now, or your life shall feel empty.

Mel Bay Presents Advanced Modern Rock Guitar Improvisation
Published in Paperback by Mel Bay Publications (July, 1999)
Author: Jon Finn
Average review score:

Great book - the best I've used
Very few guitar instruction books are revolutionary or breakthrough for me. I will buy them on the number of stars in a review and find them quite disappointing. I've always believed that there are a few keys that can unlock your understanding of the fretboard and its modes - the guitar is a deceptively simple instrument - and this book is truly it. Not only that, the tracks on the CD are keyed directly to the tracks in the book - one for one. Great great book.

AWSOME!
The approach Jon Finn brings in this book is something that revolutionized all the music theory i have learned in 17 years of guitar playing. The coolest thing about this book is not WHAT is covered but HOW and WHEN. Dont expect to find anything else but the old scales and modes you already know. But you will find yourself in a new way of viewing the guitar neck geometry, bringing your improvising skills to a 'higher' level. Congrats Jon!

A great book
I have been playing the guitar for about 7 years from now. In this time I have been improvising with the pentatonic licks from the gratest rock guitar players. After I began to master them all, I just noticed that I was doing always the same thing. After I read this book, I began to learn new ways of playing the guitar. I think that I was able to play my improvisations with a pencil, now I improvise with full color. The content is presented on an easy and funny way, making it a really a great experience. It also has a CD, which has all the examples of the book and some tracks where you can improvise applying the learned lessions.

Memphis Elvis-Style
Published in Paperback by John F Blair Pub (August, 1997)
Authors: Cindy Hazen and Mike Freeman
Average review score:

A must for Elvis Fans visiting Memphis!
When I started reading books about Elvis, I began to take notes on where he'd lived, played, recorded, etc., knowing one day I'd travel there. Then I discovered this book! Mike and Cindy had done the work for me. The book is not only well written, but there are informative stories AND they tell you if a place has been demolished, or moved -- information that saved me a lot of time. After reading the book I decided that I HAD to take Mike's tour of Memphis -- it was well worth it. I had a glorious time -- Mike is a walking Elvis-encyclopedia (and fun too!). After the tour, my niece, who was traveling with me said, "well, I think we've done it all and seen it all"! And yes, thanks to Mike and Cindy, we had.

The Ultimate Read For Any Elvis Fan!
This is the ultimate read for any Elvis fan. Especially if they are going to spend any time in Memphis. It's eerie, even chilling, to walk the grounds where Elvis walked as a teenager, and even during stardom. This is a step-by-step narrative of how to find nearly every address related to Elvis in Memphis, and every one of them with a used-to-be secret. It's really cool!

I had this book on my bedstand for months as a gift from my wife. Once I picked it up and read the first page, I couldn't put it down. Every page is loaded with "Man, If I would've only
known."

But you better hurry! These sites are rapidly falling by the wayside. As we saw in a store window in Memphis, you can contact the authors for a personalized tour. Although we haven't taken it, this would be a way-cool afternoon.

Thank you Cindy Hazen and Mike Freeman,
Dave-n-Tina Campbell

Authors hit right note with guide to Memphis!
Memphis Elvis Style Cindy Hazen and Mike Freeman A phenomenal number of books have been written about Elvis. Recently it would seem that ever more such books are being published. Some are just rehashes of the same old story; others are the recollections of a five-minute fling, being as much a flight of phantasy as a worthwhile document; a few, a very few, are really worth buying and can be returned to again and again. "Memphis Elvis Style" by Memphis residents Cindy Hazen and Mike Freeman is most definitely one of the latter. It has not been launched under a blaze of publicity, but it is nevertheless an almost indispensable addition to the Elvis library. "Memphis Elvis Style" is, in fact, a guide book of Elvis related sites in and around Memphis. The no less than 129 sites have been cleverly organised firstly by their chronological relationship with Elvis and then further grouped by type. In addition, maps and an index help searching both in the book and in Memphis itself as simple as possible. And if this wasn't already enough, each entry contains detailed instructions on how to find its site and exactly what to expect, many buildings having been flattened or modified in the course of the years. But the book is also for those who have never been or never will go to Memphis. Cindy and Mike have achieved this by expanding each entry with some background information and an anecdote directly relating it to Elvis. This additional information provides some excellent reading and is sometimes quite amusing - I particularly liked the story of Elvis's visit to his local McDonald's with girlfriend Linda Thompson., but there are lots more stories and Elvis lore to satisfy all readers, even those looking for information about Hi Records, car dealerships, and just about everything else associated with Elvis in Memphis. Definitely a book to get! David Neale September 199
